Alexandrite, which is used in June birthstone jewelry, is one of the scarcest of gems to be found on the earth. It's known as the June birthstone and is the precious stone used to commemorate the 45th and 55th wedding anniversaries. It belongs to the chrysoberyl family and is made from a mix of chromium, aluminium, titanium, iron and chrysoberyl mineral.

Color Changing Properties of Alexandrite

This June birthstone is greatly valued because of it's capacity to significantly switch colors. Compared to other stone such as sapphires and diamond, alexandrite is a comparatively novel gemstone to the market, having only been  discovered roughly 150 years ago. The Alexandrite stone was first discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia around 1830 and was named after Alexander II the Czar of Russia. This birthstone was given the name “magic gem” because of it's lovely show of colors.

A Description of Alexandrite the June Birthstone

The color of this birthstone depends on the wavelength of the illuminating light and the chemical bonds in the gem. In sunlight alexandrite exhibits a moss like bluish green but when seen under the light from a candle or lamp the color transforms to a lovely raspberry shade. This transaction is referred to as the alexandrite effect. It is a result of the chemical combination of of chromium with the rare mineral chrysoberyl. The trace element chromium gives Alexandrite it's lovely colors.

The Quality of Alexandrite Gems

It is critical to take into account the intensity of the color change when valuing an alexandrite. The gemstone is thought to be rare and more valuable if the color change is complete and deep. A further aspect to think about is the cutting quality and clarity of the gem. Alexandrites found in Russia are said to be of superior color and quality, consequently making them more expensive. Most of the alexandrites on the market are less than 1 carat as larger sizes are too expensive by nearly everyone.
