Ever since the 1st century specific stones have been linked with the zodiac signs and have been incorporated into gold and silver birthstone jewelry. In the beginning birthstone systems were based on the specific color of the gems. The origins of the practice are believed to be related to the Breastplate of Aaron which incorporated stones associated with the 12 tribes of Israel. Each gem had the name of the tribe inscribed on it and they were attached to the breastplate in 4 rows of three. Although the names of the gems that were used are known, the precise translation is undetermined so the particular gemstones used are unknown. This has resulted in different stones being associated with the different zodiac signs.
More recently birthstones became connected with the months of the year instead of the zodiac signs and there's been a lot of variation in the month to which a gem is assigned. The most extensively used system nowadays is one which was put forward by the Association of Jewelers in America in 1912, and has some substitutes for the costlier gemstones. One gemstone has been added since then. Tanzanite was added as a birthstone for December in 2002 by the American Gem Association although it is not accepted by everyone.
